Outdoors Against Cancer – Nature-Based Training for Recovery and Resilience delivered by Wild Roots Renewal.

INTRODUCTION

Wild Roots is proud to bring the internationally recognised Outdoors Against Cancer training approach to the UK.

These specialised outdoor programmes support people living with cancer — or recovering from treatment — through safe, structured movement in nature.

By combining evidence-informed exercise with the restorative power of the outdoors, the programme helps participants rebuild strength, confidence and wellbeing in a supportive environment.

Alongside the core Wild Roots programmes, these sessions offer an additional pathway for people affected by cancer to reconnect with their bodies, their health and the natural world.

Why Movement Matters in Cancer Recovery

A growing body of international research shows that physical activity plays a powerful role in cancer recovery and long-term health.

Regular movement during and after treatment has been shown to:

• reduce cancer-related fatigue

• improve cardiovascular fitness

• support immune function

• improve mood and emotional wellbeing

• rebuild confidence after treatment

• improve overall quality of life

For many people, the outdoors provides an environment where movement feels more natural, more supportive and less clinical than traditional exercise settings.

Research Highlight

Exercise after cancer treatment can reduce the risk of recurrence by up to 28% and the risk of death by 37%.

Structured physical activity is now recognised as one of the most powerful ways to support recovery and long-term health after cancer.

ABOUT OUTDOORS AGAINST CANCER

Outdoors Against Cancer is an international non-profit initiative founded by mountaineer Petra Thaller following her own experience with cancer.

The organisation promotes a holistic approach to health based on four pillars:

• physical activity and outdoor sport
• balanced nutrition
• sustainability and connection to nature
• mental and physical wellbeing

Through training programmes, partnerships and research collaborations, Outdoors Against Cancer encourages people affected by cancer to take an active role in their recovery and long-term health.

If You're Unsure

If you're unsure whether the programme is right for you, we’re always happy to talk things through before you decide.

Delivered Through Wild Roots

Delivered Through Wild Roots

Wild Roots will be among the first organisations in the UK to deliver training inspired by the Outdoors Against Cancer methodology.

Our founder is a certified UK trainer in the programme, bringing this internationally recognised approach to nature-based cancer recovery.

These sessions will be offered alongside our existing Wild Roots nature-based programmes, creating a wider range of support for people affected by cancer.

Participants can expect:

• professionally guided outdoor sessions
• safe and adaptable movement
• supportive group environments
• evidence-informed approaches to recovery
• the restorative benefits of nature

The 4×4 Outdoor Training Method

One of the core programmes developed through Outdoors Against Cancer is the 4×4 Training Method.

This approach combines structured intervals of movement and recovery, designed specifically for people affected by cancer.

Sessions include:

• four periods of moderate effort
• four periods of active recovery
• guided outdoor movement

The training is adaptable and suitable for people at different stages of recovery.

Research shows this type of interval training can help:

• improve cardiovascular health
• increase oxygen uptake (VOâ‚‚max)
• reduce treatment-related fatigue
• improve physical and mental resilience
• support long-term wellbeing

Importantly, the focus is not on pushing limits, but on gradually rebuilding strength and confidence.

All sessions take place outdoors in natural environments, allowing participants to benefit from fresh air, nature and supportive community.

What a Session Feels Like

Sessions are supportive, welcoming and non-competitive.

Participants move at their own pace, spending time outdoors with others who understand the experience of cancer and recovery.

Many people arrive feeling uncertain about what their body can do — and leave feeling stronger, calmer and more confident.

The focus is not on performance, but on reconnection, wellbeing and gentle progress.

Who This Is For

Outdoors Against Cancer sessions delivered through Wild Roots are designed for:

• people living with cancer
• people recovering from cancer treatment
• long-term cancer survivors
• people experiencing ongoing effects of treatment
• carers or family members who wish to participate alongside loved ones

No previous fitness experience is required.

All activities are adaptable and participants are encouraged to move at their own pace.

Evidence Behind the Programme

Outdoors Against Cancer programmes are built on research in:

• oncology rehabilitation
• exercise physiology
• nature-based health interventions
• cardiovascular fitness training

Studies increasingly show that structured physical activity can improve treatment outcomes, reduce fatigue and support long-term wellbeing for people affected by cancer.

Combining movement with time in nature may further enhance these benefits by reducing stress, improving mood and helping people reconnect with life beyond illness.
