why the outdoors
For thousands of years, people have turned to nature for comfort, clarity and healing.

A walk among trees, fresh air after rain, the sound of birds or running water- something shifts. Breathing slows, shoulders drop, and the mind becomes quieter.

Modern life often keeps us indoors, surrounded by noise, screens and constant demands on our attention. Nature offers something different: space to slow down, reset and reconnect.

Increasingly, research is exploring what many people instinctively feel: that spending time in natural environments can support health and wellbeing. Studies have linked contact with nature to lower stress, improved mood, better sleep, and more opportunities for physical activity and social connection.

Wild Roots programmes are built on this simple idea that spending time outdoors, in supportive company and natural surroundings, can help people restore balance, resilience and wellbeing.

nature & Cancer RECOVERY
Research into nature-based approaches to health and rehabilitation is growing, including work involving people affected by cancer and other long-term health conditions.
Evidence suggests that time in nature, outdoor activity and supportive group experiences may contribute to well-being in several ways:

• Reducing stress and supporting emotional wellbeing
• Encouraging gentle physical activity and movement
• Creating opportunities for social connection and reducing isolation
• Supporting attention, restoration and time away from everyday pressures
• Providing space for reflection and reconnection with life beyond illness, stress and anxiety during treatment and recovery

Nature-based support is not a treatment for cancer and does not replace medical care. Instead, it can complement existing clinical and community support during and after treatment.
OUR APPROACH IS EVIDENCE INFORMED
OUR APPROACH
Wild Roots programmes are grounded in a growing body of research showing that time spent in natural environments can support human health and wellbeing.

Research across psychology, medicine, neuroscience, and public health indicates that contact with nature can support physical and psychological wellbeing.

Our programmes draw on these insights while keeping the approach simple and accessible. By combining time in nature, gentle outdoor activity, supportive group environments and opportunities for reflection, we aim to create conditions in which people can reconnect with themselves, others and the natural world.

Wild Roots does not replace medical care. Instead, it offers a nature-based complement to existing support, helping people build resilience, wellbeing and a renewed sense of possibility.

Just as importantly, doing these things alongside others can create connection and shared experience at a time when cancer can feel isolating.
