Supported walks for recovery, wellbeing and connection

Overview

Walking Pathways brings people affected by cancer together for supported walks in nature, combining gentle movement, fresh air and connection with others.

Whether you're rebuilding strength after treatment, living with ongoing fatigue, looking to become more active or simply wanting the company of others who understand, walks are designed to help you take part at a level that feels right for you.

Sessions may include gentle walking and nature immersion, Nordic Walking, or Japanese interval walking, with different approaches used depending on the group, location, and purpose of the session.

There is no pressure to keep up or achieve a particular distance. The emphasis is on moving safely, building confidence and enjoying time outdoors together.

This could be for you if:

  • You are living with or recovering from cancer

  • You want to gradually become more active

  • You are living with fatigue or reduced confidence following treatment

  • You would enjoy walking with others rather than exercising alone

  • You want a gentle way to reconnect with nature and other people

If you are currently receiving treatment or have concerns about exercise, we may ask you to check with your healthcare team before taking part.

Walking Pathways isn't one-size-fits-all. Different sessions may use different approaches depending on participants, location and ability.

Gentle Walking & Nature Connection

Relaxed, accessible walks with time to pause, notice the natural world and connect with others. Sessions may include elements of nature immersion, mindful observation or simply time to enjoy being outdoors.

Japanese Interval Walking
A simple approach alternating periods of faster and slower walking, allowing participants to gradually build cardiovascular fitness and confidence at their own level.

Nordic Walking
Walking with poles can engage more of the body and provide a structured way to progressively build strength, balance and cardiovascular fitness. Instruction and equipment can be provided.

Different ways to walk

Sessions run consecutively, allowing participants to choose the style and pace that suits them

Each session includes a welcome, guided walk, and a gentle close.

Why walking?

After cancer, getting active again can feel very different from simply being told to exercise.

Walking offers an accessible way to rebuild confidence and increase physical activity while spending time outdoors and alongside others. Some sessions focus on gentle movement and connecting with nature; others offer opportunities to build fitness gradually.

Walking Pathways is about finding the right pace for you and taking the next step from there.

You can enjoy Walking Pathways as a programme in its own right, as a gentle introduction to Wild Roots, or as a way to stay connected after completing another Wild Roots programme.
